Montreal born drummer Alain Mercure developed his percussion skills at an early age.
Self taught, inspired by rhythms and with a passion for rock, he explored his instrument and
discovered its multiple possibilities.
In 1998, while following a master class with Chris McCann he expanded his vision of jazz and
explored the unlimited potential of improvisation. Vacillating between bebop, acid
jazz and free jazz styles, he exchanged ideas with long-time friends and musicians active on
Montreal scene and played at many jam sessions. He has been a member of several
formations; rock, folk, pop and jazz and has also performed in a variety of clubs and
cultural events such as Québec’s Summer Festival, the Montreal International
Jazz and Off Jazz Festivals.
Experimenting with computer-assisted composition and electronic music, he is now developing
new skills and methods to showcase his many talents. Between performing in shows,
studio work and his creative research, Alain also leads workshops in music-awareness for
children.
